Bhopal, the modern capital of Madhya Pradesh is known as the City of Lakes being one of India’s greenest cities. But its history goes back to the 11th century when its ruler Raja Bhoj called it Bhojpal. In the 18th century, Dost Mohammad brought it into the limelight when he also conquered the neighbouring Gond kingdom. Thus, besides the original Hindu and Buddhist influence, people of Bhopal’s culture has absorbed those of the Muslims, Afghans and Mughals.
Today, Bhopal is home to installations and institutions of national importance. These include ISRO's Master Control Facility, BHEL, IISER, MANIT, SPA, NLIU and AIIMS. It is included among the 100 cities to be developed as a smart city under the flagship Smart Cities Mission of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. More than 1000 small and medium businesses exist in Govindpura’s industrial zone. Industries in Bhopal are centred on electrical goods, cotton, machinery and jewellery and retail. These are found in the many highly industrialized suburbs of Bhopal.
Leisure and media organisations have set up shop in the city which has Cinepolis, Fun Cinemas and INOX as well as such leading radio networks as Red FM, My FM, Big FM and Radio Mirchi besides AIR’s Prasar Bharati and Vividh Bharati. Bhopal’s Hindi newspapers include the Nai Duniya, Dainik Bhaskar and Navbharat Times along with the English dailies The Times of India and Hindustan Times.
Naturally, with the advent of digitization, all the powers of the Internet and social media is widely in use in this city.
